OJAI, CA – Fresno Pacific junior Alex Gonzalez mustered enough strength and poise to go 4-0 on Saturday of the 109th Ojai Tennis Tournament.

However, his teammates were unable to match his success as Vicente Joli and Maxime Adam fell to tough opponents in today’s singles matches.

No. 3 seed Joli dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Cal Baptist’s Martin Vaisse in the round of 16.

The unseeded Adam continued his impressive tournament run by hacking his way to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Concordia’s Kareem Berdai in the round of 16 earlier in the day, but met his match against No. 2 seed, Alessandro Ventre in the quarterfinals.

Adam pushed Ventre, Cal Baptist’s No. 1 player, to three sets before falling 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

Gonzalez’ day began at 8:00am and ended at 6:30 in the evening as he sliced and diced his way to two victories each in singles and in doubles.

The No. 6 seed, Gonzalez rallied from 1-4 down to Concordia’s Andrey Potapkin to win 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16.  He then outlasted Cal Baptist’s Lucas Pereira 6-2, 6-7 (1), 1-0 (retired) to advance to Sunday’s semifinal against Concordia’s Augusto Elias.

In doubles play, Gonzalez and Vicente Joli won two matches to reach Sunday’s championship match.

In the quarterfinal round, Joli and Gonzalez defeated Biola’s Weston Leopold and Colin Snow 6-3, 6-0, then sailed past Point Loma’s Joel Myers and Curt Wheeler 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinal round.

The No. 6 seeded team of Adam and Marco Foelz upset the No. 2 seed, Matthjis Bolsius and Mattias Weber (Azusa Pacific) 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals, but succumbed No. 4 seed Martin Vaisse and Alessandro Ventre 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Sunday’s doubles final will pit No.1 versus No. 2, as Joli and Gonzalez will face Cal Baptist’s Martin Vaisse and Alessandro Ventre.

“Championship Sunday” begins at 8:00am at Libbey Park in Ojai.
