Edwardsville, Ill. - In the first day of action at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, Sunbird junior Jessica Suddaby broke a school record in qualifying for the quarterfinal round in the women's 400 meter hurdles, posting a time of 1:02.91. Suddaby's time was a third best time in the heat and fourth overall.
Fresno Pacific freshman Ethan Dejongh also qualfied for a quarterfinal spot in the men's 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.52. Dejongh finished second in the heat but posted the third fastest overall time in the preliminary round.
In addition, FPU junior Tiffany Marinos threw 43.79 meters in the javelin throw to finish fifth in the preliminary round. The top nine advance to the finals.
Sunbird junior Amanda Straw and freshman Milika Tuivanuavou completed day one of the women's heptathlon as well. Tuivanuavou finished first in the shot put portion of the competition with a throw of 13.12 meters and finished the day in fifth place, while Straw was 14th overall.
