Mobile, AL – No. 2 seed Fresno Pacific scored a 5-1 win in their opening round match against Bethel College (TN) at the 29th NAIA Women’s Tennis National Championships in Mobile, AL on Wednesday afternoon. Fresno Pacific (22-1) began singles play with 2-1 advantage by winning at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles.
Juniors Katia Sabate and Vanessa Heroux provided three team points with a victory in doubles, and a pair of singles wins between them. At No. 1 doubles, Sabate and Heroux bested Bethel’s Ayda Ardila and Julian Costa 8-3. Sabate quickly dispatched Ardila by a 6-1, 6-2 score at No. 1 singles.
Junior Ashley Sherr (Fresno Christian) followed up Sabate’s win with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Margot Creaseman at No. 6 singles to give the Sunbirds a 4-1 team lead.
Heroux erased a 1-4 first set deficit, to win 6-4, 6-2 over Marcella Vita Santos at No. 3 singles to clinch the Lady Sunbirds’ victory.
Fresno Pacific’s quarterfinal match against 10th-seeded Brenau University is scheduled for Thursday, May 14th at 11:00am PDT. The all-women’s college from Georgia scored a 5-2 upset victory over 7th-seed Azusa Pacific.
