SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Sunbird women's basketball team relied on a strong start and senior leadership Saturday afternoon to defeat San Diego Christian 72-52, and make it three wins in-a-row. Three FPU players scored in double digits to help the orange and blue go on to the 20 point victory and improve to 8-9 in the GSAC (12-12 overall).
Senior guard Samantha Cardeno led the way for the Sunbirds scoring a game high 19 points. Cardeno was 7-13 from the field and 5-8 from three-point range.
Sophomore forward Jessica Torrecillas also contributed for FPU with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Sophomore guard Michele Rebozzi put up 10 points as well while teammate Bricali Cooley scored six points, had six assists, and three steals on the night for the Sunbirds.
Fresno Pacific took control of the contest early on and was able to establish a 41 to 25 halftime lead. The Sunbirds shot an impressive 60.7% (17-28) from the field and 80% (4-5) from three point distance in the first period and continued to control the basketball game in the second half until the final buzzer.
“Our seniors have really decided to put this team on their backs. Bricali and Sam are playing really good basketball right now“, complimented FPU head coach Meredith Pulliam. “We still have a lot of progress to make, but we are heading in the right direction at the right time. I am really pleased with our effort."
With the win, the Sunbirds improve to 8-9 in GSAC play, and are 12-12 overall. Next up Fresno Pacific will host Westmont College Tuesday February 24th in their final regular season home game at FPU’s Special Event Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30PM.
