Katia Sabate and
Vanessa Heroux will play on Sunday (Oct. 18) for the women's doubles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small Colleges "Super Bowl" championship in Mobile, Ala.
The Sunbirds pair, which won the NAIA women's doubles title on Friday, advanced to the "Super Bowl" final on a walkover when their opponents could not compete. They will face Jillian O'Neill and Olivia Howlett from Hillsborough Community College (Fla.).
On Friday Sabate/Heroux defeated Hillary Collins/Magdalena Bresson of Savannah (Ga.) School of Arts and Design, 6-1, 7-6(2) to claim the NAIA title.
Sabate won the NAIA singles title, 6-2, 6-1 over Collins on Saturday. Sabate then was eliminated in the "Super Bowl" singles semifinals by Sona Novakova, the NCAA D-II champion from Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.).
"Katia and Vanessa have been playing well all spring, and they're really clicking right now," Sunbirds coach Neil Castro said.
Today's "Super Bowl" winners advance to the ITA National Indoors tournament Nov. 5-8 at Yale University in New Haven, Conn.
